I am trying to upload some recently taken photos from my Cannon 350D to Photos. I tried directly by cable and my a card reader but not successful. The MacBook pro Photos does not seem to find the SD card. Any help appreciated

Can finder see the images on the card when the card is in the reader? If so, copy them to a folder on your mac, and then import from the folder.
Or use file>import within photos and navigate to the card in the reader.
Make sure all of these checkboxes in Finder's General preference pane are checked:
Try Image Capture (in the Applications Folder). Some Canons don't appear to the OS.
I think the 350D is old enough that it might have the "PTP" and "PC Communications" option in the menu. Choose "PTP Communication".
