I used my @gmail.com mail account for my Apple ID also. What should I have used if using my gmail address was incorrect?

Thank you for replying to my question! I was in doubt after a friend told me, “you’re not suppose to use your Apple ID that you use for an everyday google email”…. So I began doubting myself although I’ve used it for several years. Thank You kindly
