My iMac won't allow me to open any apps. The mouse moves as normal however clicking on anything is useless. I can sign in using arrow keys to choose user profile and it appears to open as normal and shows my desktop. The files etc and apps wont open

Restart the computer in Safe Mode and then test it. A Safe Mode restart is done by restarting and holding down the Shift key until it starts up.
