Moving to a Mac with less storage

I’m moving from a Mac with a big internal hd (1Tb) to Q max with a much smaller (256Gb) SSD. My files are already on my iCloud Drive as are my various libraries (photos, music, movies), but migration assisatant keeps failing (not enough space). I’ve also copied my applications folder to the cloud and deselected it in migration assistant. The migration still fails (not enough space). I’ve tried migrating from the old computer and from a recent time machine backup (after I moved the libraries to iCloud. Any ideas?

Move your data to an external drive to free up space. Using iCloud does not free up local storage space.
