Apple kicked printer out of system

My laptop no longer shows my HP Officejet 4500 printer. It states the

software is available from Apple, but after the computer tries to locate

it I get an error message that says "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the

Software Update server." What to do?

While I was on the phone with Apple Support (scheduled call on a phone issue, and then transferred to Mac Dept on this issue) the printer magically came back onto the printers and scanners page! Not only that, but 2 other printers that Apple had kicked out years ago came back as added printers! Neither the tech nor I could figure out how - and what - happened!

Hi,

Are you using the operating system mentioned in your profile (macOS 10.13 High Sierra)?

A number of HP Officejet 4500 versions are listed in Printer and scanner drivers for Mac - Apple Support, so you could perhaps try the HP 5.1.1 Printer Software Update download from Apple. Depending on the actual system version in use, it may or may not work. As always, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files before testing anything.
