I would like confirmation that the Apple Music monthly subscription needs to be manually renewed, that it is not an auto renewal subscription.

Hi,
Apple Music subscription is automatically renewed. If you want to cancel a subscription from Apple – Apple Support (UK). If you don't want it to renew you need to cancel it.
