Suddenly I have a gray bar (can’t see through it) at the top of my home screen. There is an arrow or less than on the top left. Clicking on it does nothing. Rebooting or restarting doesn’t help. How can I get rid of it?

Can you take a screenshot, seeing if this is shown? If, then is is a misconfiguration in the system files. If not, then it is likely a screen error, and you need a new screen. The Link: Take a screenshot on your iPhone - Apple Support
