Mic not working for calls with new AirPods 3rd

I have new 3rd Gen AirPods that are having an issue where they are connected and I can hear everything I'm supposed to but anytime I answer a call or place a call the called person cannot hear me. If switch to iPhone or Speaker in the call screen menu and then back to AirPods they work fine. If I make a call using "hey Siri" the mic works because Siri places the call but when the person I call answers they cannot hear me. Again, if I switch the audio away from AirPods and back again they work fine.

I've changed settings for Automatic Ear Detection, Connect to This iPhone, and settings for Microphone auto switch or always left or right. I've also reset the AirPods, forget them and reconnected, made sure my iPhone 13 pro is up to date and there is no issue with the mic being dirty or blocked. I've also tested the mic with voice memo app and it works fine. This problem seems to be limited to calls only and I'm stumped and very frustrated. Any additional ideas for a home fix would be greatly appreciated, I'd rather not spend half a day at the Genius Bar or send them in for repair/replacement. Thank you.

I had a support chat and they rep had me reset network settings and he suggested that the problem might be wifi calling. I'm not sure if there's any merit to it, but most of my problems have occurred while connected to wifi and presumably using wifi calling. Full disclosure, I haven't had the AirPods for all that long and my sample size of problems isn't huge so I'm entirely sure if I've ever had the problem on a cellular only connection. In any event, I reset network settings and turned off wifi calling and the one call I've made where I initiated it using hey siri worked perfectly. Those two steps might be worth a try and I'd love to hear your feedback.

Another factor that might be true is that the first call doesn't pick up my voice/audio unless I do the switch to speaker and back to AirPods, but subsequent calls seem to work if I have kept the Airpods in ear and connected.

Getting AirPod Issues After an Update:

A. Single-Out this Device:

Remove these From this Device: First thing to do would be to remove this from the device. Do so by resetting them: How to Reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support. Once unpaired, pair these to a different device. See if they now work. If so, then it's an issue with the device iPhone.

B. Report this to Apple:

Do your part: Let Apple know what is going on here. Provide them with feedback on this. They may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they received on this, the more they will know what is going on, and what needs to be fixed in updates to come.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing and update, and how you have troubleshot it this far. Include the URL of this thread.
  4. Proceed from there aw necessary

Did you try resetting Network Settings and turning off wifi calling? My 3rd Gen AirPods seem to be working properly after those steps. I also did a full reset of the AirPods after the Network Settings reset, although that wasn't suggested by support. Not sure if it's one or both steps so maybe you can figure it out, but it appears to have worked for me and was suggested by Apple support via chat so presumably they know more than I do.

Went through every step. Paired with my wifes Iphone 12 pro max, no issues. Paired with my another Iphone 14 pro and issues returned. Paired with my Iphone 14 pro again, issues persist. Second pair of Gen 3's, no solution so returning them unless Apple figures out why this keeps happening.

I can get it to work by switching to speaker, then airpods. Once I start a new call then it disconnects the microphone again.

Thank you but these all address problems with the audio on the iPhone and my issue is with AirPods. My problem is very narrow and is limited to the AirPods not delivering my audio on a connected phone call whether initiated by me or a caller. I can hear the other person but they can't hear anything from my end. The mic works fine for all uses except a phone call. The problem is somewhat sporadic, although it happens the majority of the time.

Q1. "Thank you but these all address problems with the audio on the iPhone and my issue is with AirPods.[...]"

A1. To clarify:

Troubleshoot the synced device's audio --not that of the AirPods.

Q2. Volume Output and Input Issues:

A2. "I can hear the other person but they can't hear anything from my end."
