Locked notes not accessible on macOS

I recently updated to iOS 16, and when I opened Notes it prompted me about the new feature that lets the password be whatever the device password is. I changed it to this, and it works fine on my phone. On my Mac Mini (M1, Monterey 12.6), the notes show up but will not let me unlock them. They just say “Unsupported Note. This note uses unsupported features.

To view or edit it, upgrade to the latest version of macOS.” I have checked if I need to update my system and my Notes app, but both of them are up to date. I read “https://support.apple.com/guide/notes/lock-your-notes-not28c5f5468/mac,” but I still cannot upgrade my Notes (that I know of.) Is there a way to fix this?

Hello Z52-,

For this particular error that's being encountered on the Mac it would be referring to upgrading to the upcoming macOS Ventura.

Details on macOS Ventura can be located here, which includes a note that it will be available on October 24th: macOS Ventura - Apple

Prior to upgrading to a major new macOS version it would be advised to also back up the Mac. This page can help with that: How to back up your Mac - Official Apple Support

Cheers.
