Pages and iMovies update will not complete

Around 9.00pm yesterday I allowed 'update all' in App Store for an update to Pages and iMovies.

OS is Monterey 12.6.1.

Neither update has completed, making both programs inaccessible. Cannot cancel manually. Have shut down system, left it 10 minutes before restart, but problem remains.

Launchpad on dock claims I have downloaded 2.79GB of 2.79GB with an icon stating "Installing 153.1MB of 153.1 MB. Been at this status for hours. In App Store the update screen just shows spinning blue circle.

Now 14.00 - I can live without iMovie but lack of access to Pages is critical.

Generally fast enough broadband, everything else appears to be working fine. 17 hours? Really?

No idea what to do next (searched here and Googled for the problem).

To get started, given the steps you've already taken to this point, we'd suggest attempting to boot your Mac into safe mode and seeing if the issues persist. For help with doing so, check out these steps: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

If that doesn't help out, restart and boot up normally and then update your Mac and see if you're able to get these apps updated as expected at that point. 2. Back up your Mac

Before upgrading, it's a good idea to make a backup.

Back up your Mac with Time Machine

3. Use Software Update to get macOS Ventura

From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Preferences, then click Software Update. When Software Update finds macOS Ventura, click Upgrade Now to install it.

In the end I was so darn fed up I just left the machine and went to bed! The following morning the update was completed and all programs appear to be working fine.

Hopefully your great response will help someone else who is searching for an answer to a similar problem.
