Upgrading 2012 macBook Pro

I was given a MacBook Pro 2012 just this year(2022) and it is completely out of date. Is there a way I can update it to the most recent upgrades or am I better off getting a new one? I tried to upgrade it to catalina but when it asks me to sign into the App Store it tells me my information is wrong but I can go on my phone with the same information and it works perfectly fine. I don't do much on my laptop, I do write stories and i go on the internet but nothing to big or special.

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.11

Not the most recent macOS, your mac is 10 years old. The mid-2012 was real work horse, I still have a 15" for a hardware backup.

verify you are using the Safari browser to download/initiate the macOS links.

Did you perform a clean install of macOS by first erasing the whole physical drive before you started using the laptop? Here is what the previous owner should have done prior to getting rid of their Mac (one of the steps is a clean install of macOS):

You generally have to follow that 'give away or sell your Mac' article to the letter, and install the factory original (or oldest still available) MacOS.

Next, use your Apple-ID to obtain 10.11 El Capitan (if not already 10.11 or better) as a Waypoint to get the updated Mac App Store.

Once you have installed 10.11 El Capitan or better, later versions will be come more readily available.
