Time Machine

Can't seem to get my time machine backup to start backing up. Followed all the instruction and have experimented with different disk/volumes - keep getting "backup failed" messages. This used to work on this iMac - got hacked and had to reinstall Catalina, no backup since then. Appreciate some help/advice. Thanks. jn

How big is your hard drive, and how full is it on the boot drive, and Time Machine drive?

Is the Time Machine drive formatted the same as the boot drive?

Is there any data on the Time Machine drive you'd like to restore?

a brody - Many thanks for your response.

Mac HD is 8 TB, APFS

Time Mach Backup - 1 TB, Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

External 1 - 8 TB, APFS

External 2 - 8TB, APFS

No data on the Time Mac Drive - Got hacked and am trying to rebuild system. Thus far, I've gotten Catalina restored using my MacBook laptop. Seems that you are saying TM Drive needs to be APFS or vice versa?

Thanks again. jn
