Unable to check for update

I have an Apple Watch Series 5 and I want to update it to watchOS 9, but even when connected to wifi it says "Unable to check for update" which if I'm correct, only shows when you're not connected to the internet or you don't have any service etc.

Turn your watch off, wait a few minutes, turn back on and try again. Make sure you are connected to a WiFi network and if you need to update, the watch needs to be charged to at least 50% and have it on the charger the entire time it is updating.

Restart Apple Watch

  1. Turn off your Apple Watch: Press and hold the side button until the sliders appear, tap. , then drag the Power Off slider to the right.
  2. Turn on your Apple Watch: Hold down the side button until the Apple logo appears.

Hi, sorry for the late response!

Yes my personal iPhone currently running iOS 16.0. Unfortunately the watch was accidentally setup by a family organiser for a child and as I now own the Apple Watch, for some reason I'm not aloud to reset it. (As in the organiser won't let me, due to losing limited edition activity awards.)

As it is assigned by the organisers phone, does this make a difference? I've had no trouble updating it in the past, except the guardian has not yet updated their iPhone to iOS 16.
