Hello ptownsoccerdad,

This page can help out with providing some steps for the Mac not responding to key presses: If your Mac doesn’t respond to key presses

If no keys work on your Mac notebook computer’s built-in keyboard

Your Mac may be showing a low battery alert that you can’t see. Connect your Mac to an electrical outlet or connect an external keyboard to your Mac to see the alert.

As it's only happening in Messages, be sure to also try force quitting the app, and then relaunch it: How to force an app to quit on your Mac

1. Take either of these actions:
•Press these three keys together: Option (or Alt), Command, Esc (Escape).*
•Or choose Force Quit from the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen.
2. A Force Quit window opens. Select the app that you want to quit, then click Force Quit.

Cheers.

Starting the Mac up in safe mode can also help to rule out a few issues as well: Start up your Mac in safe mode

Cheers.
