My macbook pro (2016) has given up, I was able to retrieve the SSD but do not have a reader and can not find the right one online, any recommendations besides having to find another still functoning 2016/2017 macbook pro to insert it?

Other World Computing OWC at macSales.com has done more work and offers more replacement drives and enclosures for MacBook Pro models than anyone.
Unfortunately, it does Not look like they have an enclosure for that drive, at least not yet.

If FileVault encryption was in use, that storage is going to be unreadable.
