I have a Logitech Brio 500 webcam. When I plug it in, it shows up in the video menu of both FaceTime and PhotoBooth, but the picture is black. If I switch to the built-in camera, then I get a picture. If I move the webcam to a Windows machine, it works fine. What could be blocking the video, but letting me pick it in the video menus?

Hello RobHafernik,

If an external camera is not working, you'll first want to make sure it currently has access to the computer. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Camera, and make sure access for that camera is currently enabled.

If the access was disabled, enable it then try switching to that camera again to see if it works.

Choose an external camera on Mac

If the camera requires some sort of software or drivers to work with a Mac, you'll want to make sure that you have installed those on the system.

If it still doesn't work, then you'll want to contact the manufacturer of the camera for assistance.

Cheers!
