Your Hi-8 camera is an analog recorder. Thus your analog Hi-8 tape footage cannot be directly imported into iMovie or your Mac. Analog requires a digital video converter and matching cabling to convert the analog recording into a digital recording that can be stored on a Mac computer, and then imported into iMovie. Depending on the age of your Mac, you would use the USB port to import. If your Mac does not have a USB port, then you would need cable adapters to be able to plug in to your Mac's Thunderbolt 1, 2, or 3 (USB-c) ports as the case may be. You should do your own research before spending any money, and satisfy for yourself that whatever device and cable setup you purchase will work to import your footage. Also, you might consult your camera's user manual for more info.
That said, importing from analog can be hit or miss in any case. So no guarantee that it will work.
The Elgato digital video converter has been used by others on this forum. However, it is not compatible with silicon Macs. Here's a link to the Elgato website:
