Is my Apple Pencil compatible with my iPad Pro?

I’ve never used an Apple Pencil (1st gen), and I have not been successful getting it to charge/pair with my iPad Pro (11in.-3rd gen).

I bought a new charger and adapter for the Pencil. I should plug in a USB-C to one end and the Apple Pencil in the other, but they don’t actually fit. The lighting-type end fits in one end, but it’s not what any pictures describe nor online. I have no clue what I am doing wrong here.

After “charging” it, I tried opening the Bluetooth on my iPad, but the pencil does not appear.

I’m at the point where I’m not sure they are compatible.

The Apple Pencil 1st generation is not compatible with the iPad Pro 11 inch 3rd generation.

The 2nd generation Apple Pencil is compatible with that iPad. See the information in Apple Pencil compatibility - Apple Support

Apple Pencil (2nd generation)

You can use Apple Pencil (2nd generation) with these iPad models:
