Using Samsung S27A80 external monitor(s) with 2019 MacBook Pro

I have two Samsung S27A80*U monitors. I have attached them to my 2019 16" MacBook Pro using USB-C 3.1 cables. When I have two monitors attached, the MacBook frequently freezes, flashes vertical lines on the main monitor, then crashes back to the login screen. If I detach one monitor, then it stops crashing, but frequently freezes. It becomes pretty much unusable. Once I have all external monitors detached, the computer behaves normally.


Has anyone else had experience with this issue? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Should I upgrade the cables (these are the USB-C cables that came with the monitors)? Am I SOL with these particular monitors? They're listed as Mac compatible.

Hi, Gregory sHill… your MacBook Pro supports this :

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) - Technical Specifications (CA…. I’d say yes, upgrade the cables… they should both support Thunderbolt 3 over usb-c… the Samsung monitor has 1x HDMI 2.0, 1x DisplayPort 1.2, 1x USB-C, 3x USB 3.0 Type-A, 1x 3.5mm  the usb-c on the monitor will handle data transfer, 90w power and display signal… you have 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports on your MacBook Pro… oh, btw, don’t make and break connections ( eg, plug in and unplug your monitors, or anything) while your MacBook Pro is running… bad idea… here’s the Samsung support page for your monitor : https://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/?model=N0021458&modelCode=LS27A800UNNXZA

didn’t see a firmware update for your monitor..otherwise, reach out to Apple Support…

Well, that didn't work. I ran my MBP all weekend with both monitors attached, and everything worked fine. But as soon as I put a load on the monitors (I day trade in the stock markets, and I display the charting and trading software on the external monitors), everything went south. My Mac crashed three times today. I'm now back to just the screen.


Should I take my MBP into a Mac Genius and see if they can get something from the crash logs?
