Empty "[Gmail]" Folder in Apple Mail App

I have been using Apple Mail on my iPhone for several years now and recently got a MacBook. After hooking up two Gmail accounts to the Apple Mail app on the MacBook, I now see a grayed out (and empty) "[Gmail]" folder under both of these accounts on my iPhone.


For context, these folders do not show up on my MacBook (only my phone), there are no messages in the folders, and no subfolders beneath them. Additionally, they did not exist on my iPhone prior to me adding the accounts on my MacBook. I am unclear how to get rid of them and would appreciate any insight into the matter.


If it helps, my iPhone is running iOS 16.2 and my MacBook is on MacOS Ventura 13.1.

I fully deleted one of the accounts, rebooted my phone, and re-added. This did not resolve the issue. Additionally, I am having no issues sending or receiving emails for the affected accounts. I just have an empty grayed out folder that shouldn’t be there taking up real estate.

Remove your email account and set it up again

Make sure that all of your emails are there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than your device. On your device, go to Settings > Mail, then tap Accounts. Tap the email account that you want to remove. Tap Delete Account.
