reaching out through another phone, my iphone is completely frozen on the lock screen with all buttons not working.

Try a Forced Restart. Follow the instructions very carefully.

There are only 2 possible results:
1) The phone returns to normal operation
2) The phone has a hardware problem. Take it to the Apple Store or authorized Apple Service shop
