PDF Docs

Hi, I am opening, saving (exporting as a pdf to my Mac), editing (ie highlighting) and then closing pdf documents. However, sometimes I am locked out of the pdf and a password protection prompt is required to re-enter. As a result, I have to start again.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have unticked the box. I have exported the SSA via "export as PDF". The re-opened using the Master pdf Editor (free edition). Only the first page off the pdf opens. I am able to edit and save changes though.

I'm not at my Ventura machine right now. Perhaps they've broken the "export as PDF" feature. While the PDF is open in the web browser, move you mouse down towards the bottom, in the middle. You should see some controls. Click the download button. You may have to move your mouse around as this is one of those new "hidden" controls that Apple used to denigrate years ago and now implements all over the place.

Another option is the right-click or control-click on the link I posted above and chose one of the "save" options.

I’ve always used Master PDF Editor for files that Apple Preview can’t handle: https://code-industry.net/masterpdfeditor/

In Monterey, Apple Preview can’t even handle opening files. However, this bug may have been fixed in Ventura. I haven’t seen anyone complain about it recently. They are complaining about new Ventura bugs, but not this one. I have not confirmed that Ventura fixes the bug.

Thanks. I have tried that. Same problem.

You have tried what? I mentioned two different things.

I can open download the pdf, edit as such, save it. But when I try to reopen, am asked for a password. I am actually downloading corporate financial statements. Is just weird that am allowed to download the pdf but not to re-open! Thx

As I've said before, this is a bug in Apple Preview. The only workaround is to use a 3rd party PDF tool

I just tried this on a random PDF that reproduces the bug, like this one: https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf

I can open this PDF with Master PDF Editor, enter some data, save it, re-open, make more changes, etc. No problem. You have to be careful. Apple Preview is the default PDF tool so it will automatically open any PDF if you double-click on the document. Preview saves changes automatically. If you even open a PDF with Apple Preview, you risk modifying the file and locking it. You have to be careful to avoid opening these files with Preview.

And I just tried this with Ventura 13.2. The bug is still there.

It is already a PDF. You don't need to re-save it or re-open. If you touch it Apple Preview, it will be corrupted.

Maybe check your Safari settings. Go to Safari > Settings > General and look at the bottom. Make sure that 'Open "safe" files after downloading' is NOT checked. There are no "safe" files on the internet.

Delete any PDF files that you've downloaded so far and try it again.

OK. That worked:

1. saving as a pdf using arrow at the bottom of the screen

2. then dragging into File Manager

3.Opening via Master PDF Editor

4.making edits

5.Re-opening direct from file manager and changes were saved!

However, this is very fiddly. Not sure what will happen if I download pdfs on iPad and email to my Mac...changes may be lost

But thx so much.
