Hello trap115,

to verify the MacBook you could ask the seller of the second hand MacBook for the Mac's serial number (which he can find by clicking on the  in the Menu Bar and then "About this Mac"). The serial number he gives you can you paste in here to verify:

The most secure way though and the way I'd recommend you to buy a second hand MacBook is when you buy a refurbished Mac is to buy it directly at Apple: Certified Refurbished Products - Apple
