This message can't be saved in the Drafts mailbox

Since upgrading to macOS 13.2 I've started to get this message when I'm drafting a reply:

This message can't be saved in the Drafts mailbox

I appreciate that it's happening because Mail (16.0 (3731.400.51.1.1)) automatically tries to save outgoing messages while they're being composed.

There are no attachments.

Even if there were, how do you delete them?

But why the error, please? Anyone else? Anyone know why?

TIA…!

Hello Mark Sealey,

If you happen to have multiple email accounts, are you experiencing this issue when trying to send emails with each account? That can help to see if the issue may be specific to just one of them, and can determine the best path forward.

It can also help to ensure the Drafts mailbox is configured properly by opening the Mail app > Preferences > Accounts > Select the account > Mailbox Behaviors > Drafts Mailbox. If this is set to the email's drafts mailbox already, try switching it to another location for a moment to see if that has helped.

Cheers.

Thank you very much for your suggestions and help, @Eric_G1

I was just about to update this thread with something that I've discovered today, which may be the answer: Mail in macOS 13.2 apparently changed how singing and encryption are handled in such a way that previous versions of GPG Tools do seem to have behaved in such a way that appears to have been causing the error.

The good people there have released a hot fix, which so far is working… I am no longer getting the error.

This is the exact problem I just started experiencing after upgrading to MacOs 13.2 and upgrading GPG to match.

I upgraded on ~2/4/23 from Mac Os ~ 12.2

I tried this suggestion (thank you, seemed good), but it didn't work for me:

"Mail app > Preferences [Mail: Settings] > Accounts > Select the account > Mailbox Behaviors > Drafts Mailbox. If this is set to the email's drafts mailbox already, try switching it to another location for a moment to see if that has helped. "

I tried temporarily switching the draft mailbox, and permanently switching the draft box (including to "On My Mac: All Drafts") It is automatically reverting within 2 seconds back to its default of "INBOX/Drafts"

So far, the only workaround (and it's a pain) is to copy all the message I am replying to and start a NEW EMAIL MESSAGE, pasting in the decrypted body of email I am replying to so the recipient knows the context. Then writing my reply, adding a subject (copy/paste prior subject) and addressing it to the recipient.

Apparently this works because when replying to an encrypted email normally, as you write, the automatic draft saving is failing because it can't decrypt the text from the reply. But, if you copy the decrypted email you are reading, then paste that into a NEW email, it is not decrypted, and drafts save as normal as you are composing the email.

A "Hot Fix" is referenced in this thread, but I don't see a link as to where I would find that to download it? Can anyone tell me where that is? I'm guessing it's somewhere on https://gpgtools.org/ (GPG tools dot org)

@RoadRunner6,

If it's any comfort, Yes, you're describing exactly the behaviour I experienced; and I believe your analysis is 100% correct :-)

Kristoff at GPG Tools emailed me a link to the hotfix. But in case it's in some way specific to (my/an) account and/or my 'case' (this is security software after all), I'd suggest contacting their support team directly and asking them for their guidance, which I suspect will also be the new version.

Good luck - and please do say if we can help further :-)
