You should at least be able to upgrade to macOS 10.13 High Sierra. Whether you can upgrade macOS beyond that depends on the exact model of your Mac. You can get the exact model by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac".

I highly recommend you have a good backup before attempting to upgrade macOS in case something goes wrong. Sometimes an OS upgrade can reveal a failing hard drive.


People should always have frequent and regular backups of their computer and all external media (including the cloud) which contains important & unique data.
