Atmos audio from Apple TV to Soundbar using Airplay 2

Can an Apple TV 4K send Atmos audio to an Atmos enabled Soundbar (e.g Sonos Beam 2) via AirPlay 2 just like it does with HomePods?

Hello daveanz71,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help you get the most from your Apple TV and look into your sound options.

We see you viewed the Apple Support page for Play audio in Dolby Atmos or surround sound on your Apple TV - Apple Support

Try these steps to stream audio from your Apple TV to your AirPlay 2–enabled devices:

"To stream audio from Apple TV to other audio devices such as HomePod or other network-connected speakers, add your Apple TV to a room in the Home app on your iOS or iPadOS device.

  1. Make sure you’re signed in with the same Apple ID on the Apple TV and the iOS or iPadOS device.
  2. Open Settings  on Apple TV.
  3. Go to AirPlay > Room and follow the onscreen instructions to select the room where the Apple TV is located."

This Apple Support page has the full details and more steps: Use AirPlay to stream audio and video on Apple TV - Apple Support

We hope this helps to get the speaker paired to your Apple TV.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Cheers!

Airplay only supports stereo. The HomePods when used as airplay output will also do the same. It is only when used as a default speaker, which has a special ad-hoc connection, that it can passthrough Atmos. That system is setup as either mono or 2.0 (with phantom centre) and using spacial awareness to virtualize any surround+Atmos

The Beam is designed to be connected to your TV via HDMI, and it will require eARC in order to passthrough to Apple TV using the Dolby MAT container. This is a 3.0 system, so you will get a dedicated centre and then virtualization for height and some surrounds, however it can also be extended with rears and Sub to allow for better suited surround and lower frequencies.
