Permissions Issue/Can't move files to trash without entering password

My computer suddenly started requiring I type in my password whenever I want to move a folder or file to the Trash. It didn't ask that previously. Also, when I try to change permissions in the "Get Info" window for my external SSD I just installed, I am told I don't have the "necessary permissions." How do I correct this? Here are the warnings I get . . .

iMac 27″, macOS 11.7

Where was the file? Some folders are read only for your own protection, or an application may have them in use as temporary files while you edit documents, and won't let you delete anything from those folders until all applications are closed.
