using a web cam (external ) with iMovie

I want to record using iMovie, but not using the built in cam on my iMac, is this possible? the previous answer included QuickTime but that's not an option now

Unfortunately both Final Cut Pro and iMovie can only record using the built in webcam.

QT Player and Photo Booth are the only other options.
