I had the same question! Surely as technologically advanced as Apple is supposed to be this should be an EASY fix? I am OCD and want to have a folder for my grandchildren, one for my vacation, etc but don't want my camera roll full of all the pictures.

There is no fix, this is how it works. Photos you put in album is just a place holder and it points back to the photos in your camera roll, if you delete from camera roll it deletes from album too.

Putting photos in albums does not change the number of pictures you have. Albums are not storing duplicates, they are just referencing the photos in the library. You can add a photo to many different albums without needing more storage. That is exactly why the photo has to remain in the library after adding it to an album. The library is the only place where the photos are stored, not in the albums.
