Do you need an app for WiFi calling

This is my first time with an iphone and I will be traveling internationally. I was looking at downloading an esim card for Iceland and Norway, which would be data only. I have an iPhone 13 which allows for WiFi calling. Do I need an app for WiFi calling or can I use the phone like 'Normal' and just turn on the "wifi" calling option? I'm not really clear on this and would like to know exactly so I can download an app in advance of our travels. Does anyone know?

You don’t need an app, however, your carrier must “provision” Wi-Fi calling on your account. Once you have done that you can turn on Settings/Cellular/Wi-Fi calling. You can leave it on at home; when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network it will automatically use Wi-Fi calling.

I don’t think you quite understand Wi-Fi Calling. First, it works only over Wi-Fi; it does not work over cellular data. So it is irrelevant if you have a data-only SIM or not. If you are not connected to Wi-Fi then Wi-Fi calling will not work.

Second, it does not require an app. It is a feature of your phone, and must be enabled (provisioned in telco language) on your account. And once enabled it should be left on all the time, whether you are home or out of the country.

It doesn’t matter where you are; as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection (such as in your hotel, a cafe with Wi-Fi available, a MacDonalds…) you can make regular calls over Wi-Fi and it will be the same as at home. Your number will be the same, you can call a number in your home country on your unlimited plan. If you make an international call using Wi-Fi calling you will be charged the same thing for that call as if you were calling from home.

Verizon has a pretty good roaming plan; I think it is flat $10 a day for any day where you use it. Considering what the travel will cost, that is a drop in the bucket.

Thanks. I will be on a data only carrier (a company called Holafly) so I'm not sure on the "provision" aspect. Like I said, I will be international and not at home in the USA. So not sure how to provision on a data only esim card for international travel.

When I am at home in the US this is not an issue, but obviously Verizon is not in Iceland and Norway. Yes, they have partners, but the international traveling with Verizon is a tad expensive. It would be cheaper to use an esim card for data only. That is why I was asking if I need to make calls through Meta Messanger or Facebook or Whatsapp when on a data only carrier. I would prefer not to, but I can if that is required.

So I still have the question regardless of 'provision' status. Will I need an app to make calls? This would mainly to the travel company that will be supporting us on travels... and possibly the hotels if we are delayed and etc.
