Transferring iPhotos from one machine to Photos on another machine.

Hi, first time here so please be kind.

I have a MacBook 13” late 2009 that has iPhoto ‘09 version 8.1.12 (424) running OS 10.9.5. (13F1911)

I would like to be able to transfer the photos on there to my MacBook Air Retina 13” 2019 with Photos v.8.0 (511.0.180) running on OS Ventura 13.0.1.

What is the best and hopefully easiest way to do this please?

TIA for your help.

Do you want all your photos in one library on the new machine?

If so then: Copy the library from the old machine to the new machine. You can then either import images from that library to the existing one, and so end up with all in the one place

or

Use PowerPhotos to merge the libraries. - this is a more complete result.

You have waited too long, sorry.

All earlier versions of Photos (from OS X 10.10.3 to macOS 12) could open iPhoto Libraries and create a new Photos Library from the iPhoto Library. The new Photos Library would have been very similar to your iPhoto Library - with all albums and folders, and the events saved as albums. Your current version of Photos ist the first version, where this is no longer possible.

In Photos 8 on macOS 13 Ventura, all we can do is to copy the iPhoto Library to the new Mac, perhaps on an external drive, then launch Photos and then import the photos from the iPhoto Library to the Photos Library.

In Photos 8 on your new Mac use the command "File > Import", then select the iPhoto Library and wait, until you are seeing a long list of new photos, that need importing and select them for import.

This will save your photos and videos, but not the structure of your library.

Alternately, you could open your iPhoto Library in iPhoto on the old Mac, then open each event and export the photos to folders named like the events. Then import these folders in Photos on your new Mac.

You will need the full, paid version of PowerPhotos: See this link: https://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powerphotos/

The most recent version, PowerPhotos 2.3, can even convert iPhoto Libraries to Photos Libraries, see this help text: https://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powerphotos/VersionedDocs/v7/migrate_libraries.html

I cannot test, if this will work with an iPhoto ‘09 version 8.1.12 library, all my iPhoto Libraries have been updated to iPhoto 9.6.1.
