how do i create a recovery disk on early 2009 iMac capitan os 10.11?

Hi, jdh997, you’d need the following: a USB thumb drive of at least 8+ gigs, maybe 16 gigs, Mac formatted ( Mac OS journaled , guid ON) plus a copy of the Mac OS installer you want to make a recovery disk from ( usually in .dmg format) plus Lion DiskMaker X ( that’s what I used, and it worked for me)… here’s a link to the MacOS installers…you should use Safari to download ‘em… How to download macOS - Apple Support (CA)

that should have you covered back as far as Lion ( 10.7)

I really appreciate your response. I had no OS disks and no recovery disk. Both of which would have made the exercise easier.

I called Apple support and within minutes was on the line with an excellent tech agent who walked me the thru the process. She was very patient as the 2009 iMac is slow. She guided me all the way and erased the drive successfully.
