Macbook horizontal lines and flickering screen

My 2017 MacBook is in need of a replacement battery. In the meantime, the display now has horizontal lines and is flickering between the lines and normal. When the horizontal lines are present and I am on the start page with the app icons, it also has vertical lines. It seems to be 3 secs of bad view, 3 secs of normal, with regular flickering like this. It does this whether it is plugged in or not, so does not seem to be a power issue. I have restarted the computer and that does not help. I have also tried to reset the graphics card by pressing option+command+P+R for 20 seconds after restart. I am traveling in Indonesia. The non apple shop technician said I likely need a new display. But since I haven't dropped it and it seems to be very expensive, I am looking to try troubleshooting it myself. Does anyone have advice on additional things I can try? Is it possible that the bad battery is causing the problem?

The tech is most likely correct that the Display Assembly will need to be replaced. You can confirm by connecting the laptop to an external display (make sure to mirror the display) to see whether the issue occurs on both displays or only on the built-in display. If it only occurs on the built-in display, then the built-in Display Assembly will most likely need to be replaced.

HWTech, thank you for taking the time to answer. The information was very clear and I was able to follow up following your advise, to test the issue with an external display. It was fine on the external display, which now means that it is the Display Assembly that needs to be replaced. I can now go forward with confidence and either make the decision to replace the battery and Display Assembly or replace the laptop. Thank you again, your assistance is much appreciated.
