TV (Apple TV) Shuts Down When Changing Music

Anyone found a solution for this long-standing bug?

TV 4k (A2159 w/ latest non-beta OS) connected over HDMI to receiver frequently (though not consistently) shuts itself down when changing between albums, playlists, etc.

Not talking about airplay here: This is when using iPhone or Mac to "Control Other Speakers & TVs"; music is playing directly from the TV

• Usually not an issue when just skipping a track or two.

• Happens most often when a given album/playlist has been playing for a while (at least a couple of tracks in)

• Happens more often when playing live from Apple Music (vs from my own library)

Work-around/Temp Fix:

•Using the remote app to turn the TV back on and then pause/playing the music again in the Music app from the controlling device resumes playback until the next time.

Other Details:

•Multichannel audio is enabled

•HDMI Display is not powered on

•Receiver is Yamaha CX-A5200 (but also has happened with other models)

•TV is connected to the Internet over a stable wifi connection (averaging ↓200mbps/80mbps↑)

•controlling w/ iPhone XS running 16.4.1(a) (but has been happening as long as this option has been supported)

Same happening for me. I've only just started using the Remote Control feature (why did I not know about this earlier! Besides this issue it is generally better than Airplay in my setup anyway), so I haven't identified any patterns:

  • It can turn off as soon as my play-list ends (long before it goes to sleep after a period of inactivity)
  • Sometimes it turns off if I pause a track
  • Other times it turns off if I select a new track while something is already playing

And it always pauses if I change the amplifier source or turn the TV off (which is probably unrelated: Apple TV pauses music when TV is turned o… - Apple Community).

I'm using:

  • tvOS 17.2
  • iOS 17.2.1
  • iPadOS 17.2

I also have a Yamaha Receiver (RX-A1070), and I'm pretty sure all the times it has happened it has been on music from Apple Music that was streamed (not already downloaded to my device).

It is especially annoying as the Apple TV turns my receiver on and off automatically when it itself turns on and off, but for some reason in this particular circumstance the receiver does not come back on alongside Apple TV so has to be turned on manually.

This has been irritating me for quite a while now, but just not enough to go looking for a solution. Last night I decided to test my theory about the cause.

Disabling the "delay before Apple TV automatically turns off" in Turn Apple TV on or off – Apple Support (AU) seemed to resolve the issue for me.

I presume that input from "Control Other Speakers & TVs," or playing music doesn't reset the idle timer. When music is stopped, or changed, the Apple TV checks to see whether it's time to turn off.

Using Apple TV HD w/ tvOS 17.5.1 (I'll be able to check with Apple TV 4K later this week), and Onkyo TX-NR545 receiver—I had also adjusted a setting on the receiver to not standby on no signal, but I don't think that was responsible for this behaviour.

Same here. I’ve called into apple twice in the last year about this. No resolution. I’d really like to see this fixed. While the remote control option is feasible, I like to control the music from my phone as I’m not always in front of my TV. Having music play from my Apple TV ensures we get the highest quality sound output to the receiver.
