When ever I hit a link in a email, my iPad opens the link in a small 2inch strip on the far right side of the screen. I don’t want to read or watch a video on that small strip. How can I make the iPad open the link to a bigger screen.

You need to explore multitasking - as you have a slide-out view of an App enabled. Key to accessing and controlling multi-tasking is the small “three-dot” button that is found at the top-centre edge of the screen.
