The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install.

Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install.

This computer maybe listed as qualifying for an upGrade to macOS 11 Big Sur

Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence.

If Yes, suggest having at least 50 GB of Empty Space on the drive.

It will allow the Full Version ( about 12.xx GB ) to download, then expand and then commence to install.

If there is Third Party Security Software installed - remove it.

It will interfere with both the download and installation process.

The below links will help identify which version of macOS  this computer may Qualify to run.

macOS Big Sur 11 hardware requirements

As this computer is running OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan there are a lot of changes

macOS 11 Big Sur only supports everything that is Only 64 Bit coded

Many older applications and software drivers may not work in Big Sur

To check for what is not 64 Bit coded using this application to check

https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/

You may need to update, upgrade or find replacement applications and software drivers

Always make a Time Machine Backup  before doing any upGrades

You should try to fix the problem as upgrading to a newer system won't necessarily fix the problem. Tell us what problems you're having with your Mac and do the following:

Download and run Etrecheck

Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine the cause of the problem.
