On an iPhone, when you add photos to albums, the photos are not duplicated. This behavior is a design choice by Apple to optimize storage and improve the user experience. Instead of creating multiple copies of the same photo in different albums, the iPhone utilizes a concept called "photo organization without duplication."

When you add a photo to an album on your iPhone, you're essentially creating a reference or a link to the original photo. The original photo remains in the main camera roll or photo library, and the album simply organizes and displays the photos based on the criteria you choose.

This approach has several benefits:

  1. Storage Optimization: By not duplicating photos, the iPhone saves storage space on your device. This is particularly important considering the limited storage capacity of some iPhone models.
  2. Consistency: Since the photo is not duplicated, any changes you make to the photo (e.g., edits, metadata modifications) are automatically reflected in all the albums where the photo is included. This ensures consistency and reduces the need to update multiple copies of the same photo.
  3. Efficient Management: It simplifies photo management by avoiding the clutter of duplicate photos in your albums. You can organize your photos into various albums without worrying about creating redundant copies.

However, it's essential to understand that deleting a photo from the main camera roll/Recents/All Photos or photo library will also remove it from all albums. This is because the albums are referencing the original photo, and if that reference is deleted, it will no longer be available in any album.
