Reinstalling apps under new Apple ID

Many years ago my ex and I shared an Apple ID. When family sharing became available, she got her own Apple ID and began to use that. Her phone has a mix of apps installed under my ID and her own. Since we separated and she removed herself from the family sharing, she is unable to update any apps associated with my ID and it is asking for me to sign in. I have read that the solution is to delete the apps and reinstall them under her ID. My questions are:

  1. Some apps have data stored on the phone. Won't deleting and reinstalling it delete the data?
  2. To avoid deleting data, would offloading the app work? Or will it remain associated with the old Apple ID in that case?
  3. If I provide my password just for the purpose of downloading/upgrading these apps does that create any other security vulnerabilities?
  4. Would adding her back to the family share temporarily solve the problem for now? I could remove her after apps update.

To make things more complicated, I recently changed my Apple ID. So the Apple ID she is being prompted to provide a password for is my old one, not my new one. Not sure how that would affect things.

  1. Some apps have data stored on the phone. Won't deleting and reinstalling it delete the data? Yes, the data will be deleted.
  2. To avoid deleting data, would offloading the app work? Or will it remain associated with the old Apple ID in that case? Yes, offloading the app then re-downloading the same app under the new Apple ID will restore the data and place the app in the same location that it was originally stored on the device. The current data remains the same for old & new ID’s however, data changes moving forward would not.
  3. If I provide my password just for the purpose of downloading/upgrading these apps does that create any other security vulnerabilities? Yes. I would advise against it.
  4. Would adding her back to the family share temporarily solve the problem for now? I could remove her after apps update. Option two worked best for me when I separated my personal ID and created a new ID for work.

  1. Yes it will also delete the data
  2. Offloading the app will still keep it associated with your Apple ID
  3. If you provide her your password, it will allow the apps to update. The security risks are that she would have the capabilities to lock your account or change your password to one that you do not know.
  4. Adding her back to family sharing would temporarily solve the problem, but it is not a long term solution. You will be faced with the same problem in the future.

Since Apple ID's cannot be merged, the apps that were downloaded with your Apple ID will always be linked to them. If you changed your Apple ID by following these steps:Change your Apple ID - Apple Support, then the apps should be able to be updated with your changed Apple ID. She may need to restart her phone. If you created a new Apple ID, the apps will not be able to be updated. It might be time for her to just delete the apps that have your ID, even though the data will be lost, and download them again with her Apple ID.

  1. Yes. You want to be careful that you do not lose any data, so be sure to check with the app developer to determine if removing the app will cause data loss.
  2. No, offloading would not work. It will behave as you say.
  3. Yes, potentially full access and turning over control of your account and services associated with it. NOT a minimal risk.
  4. You could. Keep these sections in mind.

Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

"Remember, you can only join one family at a time, and you can only switch to a different family group once per year."

Legal - Apple Media Services - Apple

D. "Family Sharing Rules: You can only belong to one Family at a time, and may join any Family no more than twice per year. You can change the Apple ID you associate with a Family no more than once every 90 days. All Family members must share the same Home Country."

The feasibiliity of your method #4 would depend upon how frequently the apps need updating. I have one app that seems to get weekly updates, and others that haven't been updated in 3 years.

The actual email address doesn't matter. Apple would recognize it as being the same account that was used to download the apps originally.

Jim,

I have to thank you! We have been having issues with my mother's phone and apps for a while. She wanted to use her own apple id. So we set it up, but then she got frustrated trying to update her games. Then she had a little problem remembering her passcode and we had to restore her phone. Everything had to be brought down from the cloud under my id. I would have started all of the games from scratch, but my mom who just turned 87 was adamant about not losing her progress in her games! Lol! So here I am looking for a way again and found your answer. I had no idea it could be that simple. I think often times we look past the obvious to more complex ways to do things that don't end up working. Now she has all of her games ready to go, and she's happy as a clam!

Once again, Thank you!
