iPad first generation photo transfer

Hi, I have a 1st generation iPad with photos which originated from a mac book which was stolen in 2015. I was advised at the time that as the iPad wasn't the originator of the photos that the only way to get the photos off the iPad would be to "screenshot" them individually and then i could connect to wifi and email them. I was told that I shouldn't connect to wifi before that as any sync function would overwrite the photos. Is this advice still credible? Has the technology advanced to assist an alternative solution?

As your iPad is capable of supporting iOS 5.1.1 max, your iPad supports My Photo Stream.

To access photos taken from your old iPad on another device, use another device with iOS 8+/macOS/Windows to select Photos -> Albums -> My Photo Stream.

However, My Photo Stream will be shutting down on July 26, 2023, so you need to turn on iCloud Photos by the shutdown date.

Thank you for your prompt response. Im afraid it raises more questions from me. I can see I have photo stream on my iPad with approx 280 photos in but there are almost 4000 photos (some videos)in the photos overall. How do i move those from photos to photo stream (if i used to do this in the past Ive completely forgotten how - blame the ease of iCloud!).

And then assuming everything sits within photo stream, how does it get from there to my iCloud (presumably via my MacBook or iPad pro) but what are the mechanics to getting it onto those devices exactly. Sorry

Find and install iExplorer on your Mac.

It'll find your iPad, and you can directly download all photos.

iExplorer works on recent OS versions (i just ran today on Monterey), and I can confirm it'll work fine pulling photos off of an original iPad (5.1.1)..
