Wondering where you are entering your Apple ID or password,

and

Whether your MacBook model is updated to the newest compatible MacOS version available.

(You may want to get more help / info / before updating in stages from 32 bit software to 64 bit software)

How to: Identify your MacBook model - Apple Support


Eg: you may need to proceed to:

Recover your "forgotten" Apple ID and password online:

https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid#

and

What to do: If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support


or

Eg: If you were trying to gain entry to your Mac when your Apple ID and password weren't recognised... ?

How to: Change or reset the password of a macOS user account in macOS Mojave or earlier - Apple Support

Also: wondering whether or not you are signed in (to your Mac) with your correct Apple ID and password:

(Eg: You may have used them to sign in here to the Community)

How to: Sign in with your Apple ID - Apple Support


You might want to try logging in to your Apple ID Account online:

(ie: You can check, add, or edit your details, if you wish.)

Is this a Used Device?:

If you are unable to log in to iCloud, then the seller needs to log them self of out iCloud on it. If they don't, then this is a brick. This is the site the seller should have used prior to selling it to you: What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade In your Mac - Apple Support. The seller should have known better.
