can someone please provide detailed steps to updating my macbook air 2015 to newest available os as nothing seems to be compatible fresh out the box

I believe you can upgrade an 11" or 13" Early 2015 MacBook Air to macOS 12 (Monterey).

Big Sur and Monterey are still among the most recent three. Big Sur will drop off that list when Sonoma comes out, but Monterey will probably be one of the most recent three until late in 2024.

Note that Catalina and higher will not run 32-bit applications. If you are running an OS which predates Catalina, you may want to determine what (if any) 32-bit applications you are using now.
