Old MacBook Air - large files not DLed to hard drive

Can I use migration assistant if my old MacBook is space saving and doesn’t have all files downloaded?

I tried backing it up manually to an external drive and it was taking days for just a few files (I’m a photographer so there are a lot.)

You use MA for whatever is available to transfer. If certain documents don't get backup up for whatever reason, put them on an external HDD and transfer them manually with Finder. Do not use Finder to open the TM dataset.
