My desktop will not boot up

Computer will turn on but wont load. Goes to the bar and then stops

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.12

This excerpt from If your Mac doesn't start up all the way - Apple Support describes what to do:

"Learn what to do if your Mac starts up to an Apple logo or progress bar."
