I am running Monterey 12.6.7 on a late 2015 iMac. Sometimes icons for apps running on my laptop appear in my iMac's Dock. (It mostly seems to be browsers like Firefox or Brave.) I have no use for this feature and I would like to disable it, but if there is some easy way to do so I have missed it in Preferences. Is there a way to disable this behavior?

That happens to me when I have sharing enabled. Since I prefer to have screen sharing working, I just live with the icons as they disappear with I'm done working on the other computer via screen sharing.

I don't have Monterey, but in Ventura there is a setting in Desktop & Dock to not show recent applications. I don't know if that will prevent what you see, if it exists on Monterey.
You would have to disable Handoff.
Oh, those icons. Now I understand.
Ah, so that's it. Near as I can tell, I don't use Handoff. I've seen the term, but I have never changed the way I work with my computers so presumably I don't use it. I honestly don't know what it does. I have used screen sharing for ages to work on a computer in another room without having to get up and go there.
If I disable Handoff, do I also disable Screen Sharing?
I have disabled Handoff, so the icons from apps running on my laptop no longer appear in my desktop's Dock (and vice versa). And I can still use Screen Sharing between my desktop and laptop.

You would have to disable Handoff. Not sure you want to do that but…
Open System Preferences, click General, then uncheck “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.”
Just to add, if you click on the icon, it will open the selected tab from your other Mac.
