Spell check weirdness: some words seen as wrong sometimes but not others?

Sometimes, for some words, they're marked wrong sometimes but not other times.

Also, sometimes for these words, if you right-click on them, there is no option to learn or ignore the word.

Let me give you an example of the first problem here:

And as for the second problem, when I right-click on say "Harmen" in the "Why, Harmen, why" sentence above, there is no option to ignore/learn.

The default setting for Spelling is "Automatic by language". So if you type a word that exists in any known language, then it will be accepted in certain contexts where it would make sense in that language. This is what is happening in your case.

If you want something more strict. you can change this setting in Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar. If you choose "Canadian English", for example, it will then mark all "harmen" words as misspelled.

Hi truering,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We can help point you in the right direction. With autocorrection turned on and a word is underlined in red, you'll need to press Esc and continue typing to ignore the suggestion. That information is outlined in this article: Check spelling and grammar on Mac - Apple Support

In addition, it says:

* Ignore misspellings: Control-click a word, then choose Ignore Spelling. The word is ignored if it occurs again in the document (it is highlighted in other documents).

That information is also mentioned in the article we provided for you.

Kind regards.

Hi truering,

To help with your Mac dictionary, you can add the word so that it will be stored correctly when typed. While in the text document, right-click and choose "Learn Spelling".

To address the behavior of the word not always being identified correctly, make sure that you have updated to the most recent version of macOS for the most recent performance updates.

Regards.
