I do not use the trash icon in mail to say more....

However—You can remove it and add it back and compare your results(?)

Mail>View>Customize Tool Bar

—You can use the delete key to delete email

—You can swipe to delete emails

You can Quit Mail.app and relaunch it holding the Shift key and compare your results(?)
