Isolated HULU content not playing on Apple TV

We have a current gen Apple TV box we were forced into buying when PBS updated its app and Passport service. When Hulu premiered its History of the Wold Part II and Only Murders in the House, we bit and subscribed. Of the four streaming services we subscribe to, Hulu is the problem child. For the most part, the service works. Where it fails to deliver is the programs we subscribed for. What pops up on the screen when the program is selected is a spinning ball superimposed over a TV/MA rectangle. I had an extended chat with Hulu support today and what I discovered was that this is something endemic with APPLE TV. The programs can be played using the Hulu app on an iPad and air played through the Apple TV Box however, and this is the solution put forth by Hulu. What is so different about Hulu’s streaming to cause the Apple TV box to bork like this?

Update your Apple TV system software to the current version, if not done already. How to update your Apple TV - Apple Support


Try this for any misbehaving app:

  1. Force-quit the app, then relaunch and try again.
  2. If the issue persists, force-quit the app, restart the device, then relaunch and try again.
  3. If the issue still persists, delete the app, re-download and try again.
  4. If the issue still persists after that, then contact the app developer for further assistance. It is their app, and it behaves as they programmed it.
