I took a few screenshots on my macbook air, i didn’t click the floating thumbnail that i can use to save the screenshot to photos because i didn’t think that mattered. but now i don’t see my screenshots anywhere. I’ve looked everywhere i can think of, nothing. are they gone forever or just hiding somewhere?

you can use the keyboard shortcut "shift-command-5" to bring up the recording controls. then choose "options".
and then, in those options, check the "save to" location to see where your screenshots are going.

I use the screenshot app in the "Other" group in LaunchPad. Under "Options" in the panel, you can see where they're being sent and choose between several different locations.
Are you using the Dropbox app? It has a tendency to intercept screenshots.
