How to authorize Mac for previous iTunes purchases

how can I authorize my imac air for, among other things previous iTunes purchases? please do not repeat the few steps referred to on the apple public sites. these lead nowhere for me, simply I smply do not know what concrete steps to take. I believe that many others are in the same position.

If you used a different Apple ID, then purchases cannot be transferred to a new Apple ID - they are associated with the ID used to purchase them ad infinitum.


If you used the same Apple ID, then it is transferred automatically when you either set up your new device from the old one or a backup.
