My MacBook Pro is having some connectivity *sometimes* in my own home. We've get a pretty low spec router/modem setup from our provider that is a real pain to upgrade (that's a whole other story).
The easiest thing to do is to upgrade the WiFi adapter on any devices using the network.
Unfortunately my reliable ALFA AWUS036ACM doesn't seem to be compatible, can someone recommend me a similar dongle?

APs and mesh routers can connect Wi-Fi to wired.
They’re one of the common ways to add coverage to a network.
They’re largely transparent and avoid subnetting and IP router-related configuration work, too.
Adding multiple Wi-Fi routers—or any IP routers—usually means setting up subnet routing on the local network.
Easiest is usually to replace the ISP gear with mesh-capable gear, though that requires some knowledge of the ISP setup. (I’m often using Ubiquiti gear for that purpose, and that supports both wired and mesh.)
I’d tend to go toward switching to and adding APs, and with improved coverage.
No adapters have antennas. Your likely talking about a signal booster.
There are mesh and beam and bridging antennae available for more specialized applications. Ubiquiti sells various of this gear, as do others. But adding mesh-capable APs tends to be easier.
